Description
This guide outlines a realistic cleanliness standard for your fleet before each rental. Presenting a clean, well-maintained vehicle sets a positive first impression, reduces guest complaints, and protects the long-term condition of your vehicles.
Exterior
Wash the vehicle before each rental when possible. A clean exterior signals professionalism and care. At a minimum, the vehicle should be free of visible dirt, mud, bird droppings, and debris on the windshield and windows.
- A full exterior wash is recommended between rentals, particularly for longer-term rentals or vehicles that have been sitting.
- If a full wash is not practical before every trip, prioritize clean windows and mirrors — these directly affect the guest's safety and experience.
- Check for any new scratches, dents, or damage before the guest arrives and document them in your pre-trip inspection.
Interior — Vacuuming
Vacuum the interior before every rental. This includes:
- Floor mats (front and rear)
- Seat surfaces and between seat cushions
- The trunk or cargo area
- Any cup holders or storage compartments that collect crumbs or debris
Pay extra attention to vehicles that have carried pets, food, or large groups. A thorough vacuum takes 5–10 minutes and significantly improves the perceived quality of the vehicle.
Interior — Wiping Down & Disinfecting
Wipe down all high-contact surfaces with a disinfecting cleaner between every rental. Focus on:
- Steering wheel and gear shift
- Door handles (interior and exterior)
- Dashboard and center console
- Touchscreens and infotainment controls
- Seat belts and buckles
- Cup holders and armrests
- Rearview and side mirrors (interior)
Use a non-abrasive microfiber cloth to avoid scratching surfaces. Avoid using harsh chemicals on screens or leather — use products appropriate for the material.
Odor & Freshness
A light, neutral scent goes a long way — but less is more. After vacuuming and wiping down the interior:
- Use a light fabric spray or automotive odor eliminator on seats and floor mats to neutralize any lingering smells.
- A brief airing out with windows open (10–15 minutes) before the guest arrives is often enough.
- Avoid hanging air fresheners or using heavy spray products — strong artificial scents can be off-putting and may trigger sensitivities for some guests.
- If a vehicle has a persistent odor issue (smoke, pets, food), address the source directly rather than masking it with fragrance.
Note: If a guest returns a vehicle with significant odor or mess beyond normal use, document it thoroughly with photos at check-in and address it before the next rental.
