Introduction
We get that renting out your RV can be both an exciting and scary decision — that’s why we go above and beyond to give you maximum protection when you share your rig with the world. From our Liability policy to our Comprehensive and Collision coverage, we’ve revolutionized insurance options to keep you covered when you rent with Outdoorsy.
Outdoorsy is the only peer-to-peer RV rental platform to provide commercial insurance for qualified guests and hosts renting on Outdoorsy when the host’s personal RV insurance would not apply.
How does it work?
Outdoorsy has partnered with the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia and Aviva to ensure the safety of our hosts and guests worldwide by some of the world’s best insurance companies. Together, we have created a Protection Package for trips ‘north of the 49th parallel’—beautiful Canada.
We get that renting out your RV can be both an exciting and scary decision — that’s why we go above and beyond to give you maximum protection when you share your RV with the world.
From our Liability policy to our Comprehensive and Collision coverage, we’ve revolutionized coverage options to keep you protected when you host with Wheelbase/Outdoorsy.
Our ‘episodic’ Protection Packages offer coverage when the host’s personal RV insurance may not apply.
Please note that any motorized unit or trailer with a salvage or rebuilt title history does not qualify for coverage and cannot be listed on Outdoorsy.
Guests can choose between three levels of protection packages, which feature tiered deductibles. The guest is responsible for these deductibles, which can range from CAD $500 to CAD $1,500 for Liability and Comprehensive and Collision coverages in the event of a damage claim.
Protection for Hosts and Guests
The host’s personal RV insurance policy covers the vehicle for personal use but usually does not apply when the RV is being rented out. Hosts should be aware of their policy’s terms as insurers may deny claims—or even drop the policy entirely—if the RV is rented out.
With Outdoorsy’s Protection Packages, coverage during the rental period includes:
- Up to CAD $2M or CAD $5M in liability coverage (up to CAD $200,000 in BC)
- Up to the RV’s actual cash value in comprehensive and collision coverage
To maintain coverage eligibility, hosts should make sure that each booking has an active Protection Package, 90 day inspections are completed, required pre-trip and post-trip photos are taken, and the keys are handed off to a verified driver.
Note: We recommend taking a picture of the front & back of any verified driver's licenses as part of the walkthrough/key exchange.
Note on Deductibles
For Outdoorsy.com bookings the insurance deductible is included and stated in the details of the protection package. For direct bookings your deductible is going to be 2% of the stated replacement value; with a minimum of $500 and a maximum of $1,500.
In all claims cases (Outdoorsy guest or Direct guest), our Outdoorsy claims representatives will work with you collect the deductible amount.
Protection Package Overview
During the booking process, guests are asked for payment information, their driver’s license, and (in some cases) additional information as part of our driver verification process. This helps to ensure that all drivers meet our eligibility and coverage requirements.
In most cases, the driver verification process is quick and easy. The Protection Package is activated when guests pass driver verification and their coverage begins the moment the keys are handed off to the guest.

*Windshield Coverage covers minor chips or cracks to your windshield that are repairable at no cost to you. For example, 1-2 minor chips (not in the field of vision) caused by a collision or comprehensive event are covered with no deductible with the purchase of our protection packages. Any damage that requires a replacement of the windshield, as opposed to a repair, would be subject to a deductible.
How the Protection Packages work
Coverage is only active for the duration of the guest’s trip—as booked on your Wheelbase dashboard.
Coverage begins at the time of the key exchange (at the start of the trip) and ends when the vehicle is returned and the keys are handed back to the host at the end of the trip.
Please note that any motorized vehicle or trailer with a ‘salvage’ or ‘rebuilt’ title will not qualify for coverage. If the vehicle does not qualify for coverage, hosts can ask their guests to get an insurance binder for Liability coverage from a third-party insurance company.
The Protection Packages will cover vehicles traveling to and from the United States or Canada; however, guests should consult with their host before taking the vehicle across the border. Hosts will always have the final say on whether or not this is allowed. Coverage is void for the entire booking period if the vehicle enters or attempts to enter Mexico.
Why is there a protection package pricing difference between Outdoorsy guest bookings vs direct guest bookings?
Just like in traditional insurance, our Protection Package prices are set based on a number of different variable factors and are subject to change over time. Some of the basic considerations for both Outdoorsy guests and Wheelbase direct guests include class and type of vehicle, length of vehicle, and value of the vehicle. These are however two distinctly different product offerings with different risk profiles and differences in the coverages offered. The Marketplace prices can vary week over week due to any number of factors including testing, or sometimes certain risks and costs may be spread across the marketplace. For Wheelbase direct guests there are set rates and consistent coverages that may instead vary by dealer or by vehicle based on a risk profile or if a dealer has added an additional premium to their pricing.
