Overview
Every Auto rental with Wheelbase insurance enabled includes a Protection Package. Guests choose a tier with a $2,500, $1,000 or $500 deductible. Every tier includes state minimum liability plus physical damage coverage for the rental vehicle up to its actual cash value (ACV); vehicles over $150,000 ACV aren't eligible.
Booking channels and pricing
Packages are available on two booking channels, and pricing differs between them:
- Ride bookings: Guests book your vehicle on the Ride marketplace. Package prices are set per vehicle.
- Wheelbase Direct bookings: Guests book through your own website, or your team creates the booking (phone, walk-in, dealer site). Package prices follow the Wheelbase Direct rate, which you can adjust up or down.
Auto Protection Packages
Auto Basic is pre-selected at checkout. Guests can upgrade to Auto Essential or Auto Premier once the booking is confirmed.
| Package | Deductible (per incident) | Liability | Physical damage | Drivers 21–24 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Auto Basic (default) | $2,500 | State minimum | Up to ACV | Eligible |
| Auto Essential | $1,000 | State minimum | Up to ACV | Eligible |
| Auto Premier | $500 | State minimum | Up to ACV | Not eligible |
Example daily rates
Example rates as of October 2026. Rates change over time and vary by vehicle, location and booking date. The final price shows at checkout.
| Package | Ride: 2022 Toyota RAV4 | Ride: 2026 Tesla Model Y | Wheelbase Direct (base rate) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto Basic | $10/day | $14/day | $43.82/day |
| Auto Essential | $12/day | $18/day | $46.72/day |
| Auto Premier | $20/day | $25/day | $47.83/day |
- Ride prices are set per vehicle and rise with vehicle value.
- Wheelbase Direct base rates come from California dealer bookings and may vary by state. You can raise or lower the rate in your dashboard; for example, one dealer charged $45.13/day for Basic and another $43.92/day for Essential.
Roamly Rental Shield (Wheelbase Direct)
The Roamly Rental Shield costs $10.50 per day ($13.33 in Hawaii) and covers damage to the rental vehicle with a $0 deductible. It is a supplemental damage product, not an insurance policy, and it does not include third-party liability.
For full details, see What is Roamly Rental Shield?
| Coverage | Limit |
|---|---|
| Damage to the rental vehicle | Up to $50,000 or ACV, whichever is less |
| Deductible | $0 |
| Roadside assistance | Up to $700 |
| Medical evacuation | Up to $5,000 |
- Eligibility: vehicle ACV of $50,000 or less, trips of 45 days or less, and Guests 21 or older who live more than 100 miles from the vehicle.
- Billing: charged per calendar day, so a rental that spans two calendar dates is billed as two days.
- Timing: must be added at least 24 hours before pickup. Bookings with the Shield can't be extended; create a new booking instead.
- Check the Guest's liability insurance. Confirm the Guest has active personal liability insurance before every Roamly Rental Shield booking.
- Turning it on: go to Settings → Premium Services. It applies to every eligible vehicle in your fleet.
- Claims: contact IMG at 1-317-655-9798.
Rideshare Packages (Uber and Lyft only)
Guests driving for Uber or Lyft must pick a Rideshare package. It costs the standard daily package price plus a rideshare surcharge that is calculated at checkout.
| Package | Deductible | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Rideshare Basic (default) | $2,500 | State minimum liability + damage to the vehicle |
| Rideshare Essential (upgrade) | $1,000 | State minimum liability + damage to the vehicle |
| Rideshare Liability Only | None (no damage coverage) | State minimum liability only |
When each policy applies
| Rideshare period | Driver status | Who covers it |
|---|---|---|
| Period 0 | App off or personal driving | Standard Protection Package |
| Period 1 | App on, waiting for a request | Rideshare package |
| Periods 2–3 | Request accepted through passenger drop-off | Uber's or Lyft's commercial policy |
When the app is off, the standard package applies (Period 0).
Rules and tips for Hosts
Delivery gig work is not covered. Using the vehicle for DoorDash, Uber Eats, Instacart, Amazon or any food or package delivery voids all coverage on the rental.
- Guests must be 25 or older. Drivers aged 21–24 can't book rideshare rentals.
- Turning it on: go to Vehicles → select the vehicle → Details → Allowed Rental Use, tick Rideshare friendly — Uber, Lyft, then click Save. The vehicle must already be approved for Wheelbase insurance.
- Guests using their own insurance: Axle confirms that a policy is active but not that it includes a rideshare endorsement. Call the Guest's insurer and ask whether the policy covers a rental vehicle used for hire.
- Protect your deductible. Consider a higher security deposit for rideshare rentals ($1,000 for Essential, $2,500 for Basic).
- Guests are responsible for Uber and Lyft approval. Rental fees and package charges aren't refunded if Uber or Lyft rejects the Guest or the vehicle.
What's covered and what's not
Packages cover sudden, accidental damage to the vehicle during the rental, such as collisions, theft, vandalism, fire and weather. They don't cover wear and tear, mechanical breakdowns, or damage from misuse.
Some actions void coverage for the whole booking, including delivery gig work, letting an unverified driver use the vehicle, and taking the vehicle into Mexico or Canada.
