Description
This article provides a high-level overview of how insurance works within Wheelbase and links out to the detailed articles for each topic. Getting insurance configured correctly before your first booking is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your fleet.
Step 1: Enable Insurance on Your Vehicles
Insurance must be enabled before guests can be offered coverage at checkout. You can apply it at two levels:
- Global level — Apply a default insurance bundle to all vehicles at once via Settings → Premium Services
- Vehicle level — Apply or adjust insurance on individual vehicles via Vehicles → [Vehicle] → Insurance & Roadside → Apply Now
When applying, you'll need the vehicle's VIN, state of registration, and current mileage. Once submitted, the status will show "Under Review" and typically updates to "Approved" within minutes.

Step 2: The Different Types of Packages
Wheelbase offers three protection options for guests:
Auto Basic — Full coverage with comp & collision. Higher deductible ($2,500).
Auto Essential — Full coverage with comp & collision. Lower deductible ($1,000). Best for guests who want stronger protection.
Roamly Rental Shield (RRS) — A supplemental physical damage product, not a full insurance policy. Covers up to $50,000 in vehicle damage with a $0 deductible for the renter. Does not cover third-party liability — guests must have their own active liability coverage. Priced at $10.50/day (most states).
- RRS is enabled globally via Premium Services and automatically applies to eligible vehicles (ACV ≤$50,000, trip ≤45 days, renter age ≥21)
- RRS cannot be added to same-day bookings and cannot be extended — a new booking must be created

Step 3: Decide Whether to Allow Guest Insurance
You have two options for how guests can satisfy the insurance requirement:
Option A — Require Wheelbase coverage only. Guests must use Auto Basic or Auto Essential. Wheelbase handles driver license verification automatically. Renters must be at least 25 years old to qualify.
Option B — Allow guests to decline Wheelbase coverage and bring their own insurance. If you enable this, you are responsible for verifying that the guest's personal policy is active and covers rental use. This is where Axle comes in.
Axle: Personal Insurance Verification
Axle is a $3.00/verification service built into Wheelbase that automatically checks a guest's personal insurance policy against four criteria: active policy, date coverage, collision coverage, and identity match.
- Enable via Settings → Premium Services → Personal Insurance Verification
- Guests verify by clicking the "Verify Insurance" button in their confirmation email and connecting their insurance provider — uploading an ID card photo does not count as verification
- Monitor status in your dashboard; use the "Send Reminder" button if a guest hasn't completed the step
Important: Axle does not verify rideshare endorsements. If a guest is using the vehicle for Uber or Lyft and is bringing their own insurance, you must call their provider directly to confirm rideshare coverage is included.

Special Cases
Rideshare Use (Uber & Lyft)
Wheelbase Auto Basic and Auto Essential cover rideshare use for TNCs (Uber and Lyft only). Coverage does not extend to gig delivery work (DoorDash, Amazon, etc.). If a guest is using the vehicle for delivery, verify their personal policy covers that use — Wheelbase insurance will not.
For rideshare rentals, consider increasing your security deposit to reflect the higher deductible risk ($1,000 for Essential, $2,500 for Basic).

International Drivers
International drivers are eligible for Auto Basic and Auto Essential, but automated verification systems typically cannot process foreign driving history. You are responsible for manually verifying:
- Driver is at least 25 years old
- A valid foreign driver's license is on file
- If the license is not in English, a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) is also required
Upload all documents to the Documents & Files section of the reservation.

If a Vehicle Shows as "Ineligible"
A vehicle may be flagged as ineligible for Wheelbase protection for the following reasons:
- Age — Vehicle must be 12 years old or newer
- Mileage — Must have fewer than 200,000 miles
- Salvage title — Vehicles with a salvage title are not eligible
- VIN error — Double-check the VIN entered in the Insurance & Roadside tab
- Exotic brand — Vehicles from brands like Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls Royce, and others undergo manual underwriting (typically 24 hours)
Ineligible vehicles can still be rented — guests can use their own insurance (verified via Axle) or purchase the Roamly Rental Shield for physical damage coverage.
