Pay-per-mile is an insurance option your guests can choose at checkout on eligible Wheelbase Auto listings. Instead of a flat insurance rate for the trip, your guest pays based on the miles they actually drive — with a 50% discount on miles driven in Full Self-Driving (FSD) mode.
|
AT A GLANCE • Who it’s for: Wheelbase Auto hosts renting Tesla vehicles connected to Roamly Fleet telematics. • What the guest sees: A third insurance option at checkout, priced as an estimate based on 100 miles per day. • What they actually pay: The final amount, calculated from real trip mileage after you check the vehicle back in. • What you need to do: Nothing extra. Mileage is captured automatically — no odometer photos required. |
First: this is not the same as mileage overage fees
Two different things on the platform use the words “per mile.” They are unrelated, and both can apply to the same trip. Here’s the difference:
| Mileage allowance & overage fees | Pay-per-mile insurance | |
|---|---|---|
| What it covers | Wear and tear on your vehicle | The guest’s insurance for the trip |
| Who sets it | You, on your listing’s Pricing tab | Roamly — rates are set by the insurance program |
| Who gets paid | You | The insurance carrier |
| How miles are captured | You record start and end odometer readings with photos | Automatically, from Fleet telematics |
| Availability | Most listings | Eligible Fleet-connected Teslas only |
If you charge a mileage overage fee and your guest selected Pay-per-mile insurance, the two are calculated independently. One does not replace or offset the other.
Which of your vehicles are eligible
Pay-per-mile is a specialized product with a narrow footprint. A listing must meet all three conditions:
1. It’s a Wheelbase Auto booking. This option does not appear on RV or towable bookings.
2. The vehicle is a Tesla. The per-mile program is built around Tesla telemetry and FSD data.
3. The vehicle is connected to Roamly Fleet telematics. This is what supplies the actual mileage at the end of the trip. Without the connection there is nothing to reconcile against, and the option won’t be offered.
|
DON’T SEE PAY-PER-MILE ON A LISTING THAT SHOULD HAVE IT? Eligibility depends on your telematics connection and your account configuration, and the option is hidden rather than shown as unavailable. Contact your Wheelbase account team and we’ll confirm the setup on your vehicle. |
What your guest sees at checkout
On an eligible booking, Pay-per-mile appears as a third choice alongside the standard insurance options. The guest sees:
• An estimated cost, calculated on an assumption of 100 miles per day for the length of the trip.
• A per-mile rate and a deductible. Rates vary by the renter’s age bracket and the coverage tier they select — the standard tier carries a $1,000 deductible, and a higher tier carries a $2,500 deductible.
The per-mile rate is locked to the booking at the moment the guest checks out. It won’t change later, even if program rates change before the trip starts. The estimate, however, is only an estimate — the final amount depends entirely on how far the guest drives.
The Full Self-Driving (FSD) discount
Miles driven with FSD engaged are billed at 50% of the standard per-mile rate. Autonomous driving is treated as lower risk, so the insurance cost for those miles is halved.
This is tracked mile by mile, not trip by trip. If a guest uses FSD on the highway and drives manually around town, the system separates the two automatically — there is no toggle you or your guest need to set, and no all-or-nothing threshold.
How the final cost is calculated
When you check the vehicle back in, the system pulls two numbers from the Fleet integration: total miles driven, and how many of those were FSD miles. The final insurance charge is:
(FSD miles × half rate) + (non-FSD miles × full rate)
Worked example
A guest takes a trip and drives 200 miles total. 80 of those miles are in FSD mode.
| Segment | Miles | Rate applied |
|---|---|---|
| FSD miles | 80 | 50% of the per-mile rate |
| Non-FSD miles | 120 | Full per-mile rate |
| Total billed | 200 | Sum of both lines |
Because the checkout estimate assumes 100 miles per day, a guest who drives less than that will typically pay less than the estimate, and a guest who drives more will pay more.
What you need to do
Very little — that’s the main advantage over manual mileage tracking.
1. Keep the vehicle connected. The Fleet telematics connection is what makes the product work. If it drops, reconciliation can’t run. Additional information about connecting telematics can be found here: How to Integrate Telematics with your Fleet
2. Check the vehicle back in as normal. Completing check-in is what triggers reconciliation. There are no odometer photos to take for this product.
3. Review the breakdown in your dashboard. Once the trip reconciles, you’ll see total miles, FSD miles, non-FSD miles, and the cost applied to each.
Frequently asked questions
Does Pay-per-mile change what I earn on the booking?
No. This is the guest’s insurance cost, paid to the carrier. Your nightly rate, your fees, and your payout are unaffected.
What if FSD is switched off partway through the trip?
It’s handled automatically. Telemetry tracks total miles and FSD miles separately across the whole trip, so each mile is billed at whichever rate applies to it. Nothing is rounded up to a single rate.
Can I turn FSD on or off for a specific trip?
No. Whether a vehicle supports FSD is a property of the vehicle and its Fleet connection, not a per-trip setting. The actual split between FSD and non-FSD miles comes from trip telemetry at reconciliation.
Can I choose whether to charge the guest, the way I can with mileage overages?
No. Overage fees are yours to collect or waive. Pay-per-mile is an insurance premium that reconciles automatically — a different decision, made in a different place.
My guest says the final charge is higher than the estimate they saw. Is that right?
It can be. The checkout figure is an estimate based on 100 miles per day. If your guest drove more than that, the final charge will be higher. The mileage breakdown in your dashboard shows exactly how it was calculated.
Is Pay-per-mile available on my RV listings?
No. It is limited to Wheelbase Auto bookings on eligible Fleet-connected Teslas. RV and towable listings use the standard protection packages.
